PMI ITTOs
The inputs, tools and techniques, and outputs of the 42 PMI processes.
Misc Study Notes:
- The inputs and outputs are often artifacts of the project such as documents where the tools and techniques are often methods, like brainstorming.
- The inputs to processes are often the outputs of previous processes.
- Since the enterprise environmental factors and organizational process assets are generally different for each process, these are abbreviated and then detailed in each occurrence.
- To help derive (vs. memorize) EFFs, answer the question, “What intangibles will influence this process?” Examples: culture, marketplace, and industry standards.
- To help derive (vs. memorize) OPAs, answer the question, “What resources can assist this process?” Examples: templates, same documents from previous projects, and lessons learned database.
- I’ve drafted writing templates for learning and self-testing the ITTOs. It indicates the number of each items needed for each ITTO of all the 42 processes as a hint while learning and writing them. They are arranged by knowledge area, since that is how most people learn them. The PDF is available here. a previous breakout by process flow is here. A still older version is here.
Use the first table to practice writing in the ITTOs of any PMI process. Scroll down for the completed ITTO tables.

Great information, Much appreciated for all your hard work with future PM community…
This great. I am in the process of studying for the PMP exam and the ITTO charts are one of my weaknesses. This will help me alot. Thanks for sharing.
Hey thanks folks! The feedback is appreciated.
Best,
Mark
Hey Mark,
Fabulous job. One quick question if you know the answer of the top of your head. Why did PMBOK editors remove ‘Cost Management Plan’from “DETERMINE BUDGET” process. Wondering coz it was there in the 3rd edition and make sense as cost processes as governed by the Cost management plan. Was it replaced by something or made redundant?
Would like to hear your view.
regards
Fawzia (Pakistan)
Hello Fawzia,
Great question and great to hear from Pakistan!
I think sometimes PMBOK changes how they categorize. The Cost Management Plan is no longer an explicit output of any process but is an input of several. So I expect it is how you suggest, that the outputs of Determine Budget include the Cost Performance Baseline which feeds into the Project Management Plan. So it looks like the Cost Performance Plan is not created as an output of a single process.
This is similar to how the Scope Baseline is not a single output, but then is used as an input when its components (WBS, WBS dictionary, and Project Scope Statement) have each been output.
I hope this helps!
Best,
Mark
Thanks Mark. Your reply makes sense. Appreciate your quick response.
Regards,
Fawzia
Hello Mark,
May I also suggest a new tool for practicing ITTOs for the PMP / CAPM exams? It has an ITTO Quiz, an ITTO explorer and also gives detailed graphical analytics. Here’s the link:
http://www.brainbok.com
I’ll appreciate feedback from you and your readers.
Thanks.
