iPhone In MotionThe iPhone’s limited support for even basic animation and motion, especially online has been a challenge for years. This is the one feature that seems a natural fit for a media based smart phone. I’d grown dependent on these feature before migrating off my Blackberry PDA. As a driver both on Austin’s streets and golf courses, I rely on doppler radar to monitor weather. It helps me avoid heavy rain, dangerous lightning, flash flooding, etc. My car feels the same about Texas’ Spring hail season. Unless you are a professional meteorologist, the single most useful datum regarding the threat of an inbound storm is the most recent doppler radar, in motion. There are a lot of 99¢ radar-in-motion apps on the App Store and some of them worked fine for me. But they mostly receive poor reviews, are often buggy and none are free. Also, the clearest, most useful images I’ve found are from KVUE’s weather site. The handy animated gif files published there are a simple way to track the direction of storms, but not with an iPhone. Enter iPhoneInMotion.com, where I’ll animate useful content that is not available for the iPhone. Apple’s support for animated gif files, AVIs, mpegs, etc may be forthcoming, but until then, this can help keep you advised of your current weather activity.
